50's Heals adjustable table and pair of Ercol stacking chairs

50's Heals adjustable table and pair of Ercol stacking chairs

£995.00

A quirky piece of British design by Heals of London c.1958 along with a pair of early Ercol stacking chairs (adult size) perfect for the smaller space. The table is exceptionally rare - put simply you’ll probably never see another, its the only example I’ve ever seen. The drop-leaf table is oval in shape with a mahogany veneered top trimmed in beech with wishbone style solid beech legs with brass detailing. The table features an unusual mechanism engineered from a combination of alloy, brass and steel with two handles that adjust the table height from 56cm to 64cm or to 70cm - its a tad bonkers! The table and chairs have been fully restored and newly lacquer finished (as per original) and work brilliantly together - this set is perfect for the smaller space and will seat 4 in comfort with both drop leaves extended. The table was in a terrible state when sourced and does have a variety of small dings, bruises and wax filled spots on the table surface and legs but nothing nasty it presents wonderfully for a 60+ year old table. In 58 this was part of Heals new range and was priced at £30 - a significant sum at that time. (see image from Design magazine July 1958) The Ercol stacking chairs are early production examples with a single curved back stretcher (later examples have 2) and are full adult versions (44.5cm seat height) as these chairs were also produced in 4-5 different heights (as low as 28cm) for use in primary schools. A wonderful piece of uber rare 1950’s British design.
