Gordon Russell R407 Helix sideboard c.1950

Gordon Russell R407 Helix sideboard c.1950

£1,650.00

A wonderful example of a British classic - a Gordon Russell R407 sideboard often referred to as the Helix or Double Helix sideboard designed by the husband and wife team of David Booth and Judith Ledeboer in 1950. Exhibited at the Festival of Britain between May-September 1951 and then produced by Gordon Russell throughout the 50’s. This example retains its factory label and its Utility Scheme stamp dating this piece to pre January 1953 when the Utility Scheme was finally abolished making this a very early production example. The piece presents beautifully having been given a full professional restoration, just the odd tiny nibble and ding - stripped of its original factory cellulose lacquer the piece has been newly lacquer finished that is extremely hard wearing, heat, stain and uv resistant and maintenance free - all brass ware has also been lightly cleaned and polished - the piece retains a wonderful mellow period patina with a carcass of mahogany and sapele with doors veneered in Bombay rosewood with the signature routed pattern. Internally the piece features a single shelf to the left and solid mahogany drawer to the right that is sectioned and felt lined for cutlery. A fantastic and rare early example of this hugely important British design.
